During the first semester, the entire program is divided into three classes, each learning how to interpret and translate according to the phonetic order of last names.

Two interpretation courses will be tested twice during the semester, and the results will determine whether or not we can enter the interpretation group in the second semester.

Our teacher will ask us to fill out a volunteer form and select an interpretation or translation team by the term's end. While the majority of students preferred the interpretation group, only a small minority were selected. The exam proved to be extremely difficult and caused significant stress. Nonetheless, I reassured myself that if I didn't get chosen for the translation team, I could still pursue job openings on the internet. Upon receiving an email from my teaching secretary informing me of my acceptance into the translation team, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed in the privacy of my hotel room at home.

Furthermore, certain translation courses may have minimal assignments that are personally assessed by the instructor. As a result, translation grades heavily depend on homework performance. This semester offers a variety of elective courses to choose from.

The majority of students come from mainland China, and some also come from Hong Kong and Macao. The teaching languages are Mandarin and English, and almost all teachers occasionally include Cantonese.

Besides English and translation, students also take French, Japanese, Polish, engineering, and business courses. These interdisciplinary tests may lead to employment opportunities.

After one or two years, most students, including those from mainland China, the United States, Britain, Hong Kong, and other places, even those who have completed their second master's degree, have a gap.

No matter what kind of teaching style they use, students benefit greatly from teachers from different regions, both academically accomplished and experienced in practice. Zhang remained dedicated to conducting interpretation classes without any setbacks even during the pandemic. Mr. Zhang would note after each class, "The students are really doing well," to which I would reply, "Truly impressive." It is safe to say that Mr. Zhang is a superb translator and teacher.

During MATI's study and work hours, one can easily find respite from stress and external pressures, leaving worries behind. Personally, I value the friendly and welcoming social atmosphere among classmates, where mutual respect is highly regarded and privacy is respected. It's worth mentioning that Hong Kong Polytechnic is committed to protecting student confidentiality, as shown by teachers' limited knowledge about us during class. While Teacher Zhang may have some understanding of our backgrounds through reviewing our resumes, he also recognizes the importance of upholding legal safeguards.

Almost every day there is a job and do homework. It was a hard day, now look back, or miss. In less than a year, I had a special feeling about Hong Kong and Polyu.
